Theatre on the Steps is committed to supporting creatives who live and work in Shropshire and the surrounding areas to develop careers in the creative sector. Our residency initiatives reflects our long-term vision to establish Bridgnorth as a centre for exciting, inclusive, and artist-led performance-making — strengthening professional pathways and laying the groundwork for sustained cultural development in the area.
Aethelflaed Theatre Company
Aethelflaed Theatre Company is a new, professional repertory company founded in collaboration with director Naomi Coleman. Based at our venue in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, Aethelflaed represents an ambitious step toward building sustainable, high-quality theatre in the region. The company will deliver at least two productions annually, creating new opportunities to platform and nurture local professional creative talent.
The name Aethelflaed is inspired by the Anglo-Saxon Warrior Queen who founded and fortified Bridgnorth.
Beyond the Steps Company
Beyond the Steps Company is Theatre on the Steps’ development ensemble, created to support artists at key moments of transition within their creative careers.
Building on Theatre on the Steps’ strong community roots and complementing the professional work of Aethelflaed Theatre Company, Beyond the Steps provides a vital stepping stone for creatives who are ready to re-engage, re-focus or progress into professional performance. This includes emerging artists moving towards their first professional opportunities, as well as those returning to the industry after time away or seeking a renewed career boost.
The company offers a supported, high-quality environment where performers, makers and collaborators can rebuild confidence, refresh skills and gain meaningful professional experience. Through ambitious productions, structured development and clear progression pathways, Beyond the Steps uplifts creatives at different stages of their journey, strengthening the local talent pipeline and ensuring artists connected to Theatre on the Steps can flourish within the professional sector.
